Overview

Jaffna was made into a colonial port town during the Portuguese occupation of the Jaffna peninsula. Remains of some Portuguese churches and the main Hindu temple of the North, the Nallur Kandaswamy temple, built in the year 948, reflect the city's rich historical heritage.

You also see the public library, the bell tower and Jaffna train station at its days of yesteryear. The city reflects a unique blend of colonial history and vibrant Tamil culture, offering visitors an authentic experience of northern Sri Lanka.
