Cultural Capital of the North
Jaffna was made into a colonial port town during the Portuguese occupation of the Jaffna peninsula. Remains of some Portuguese churches and the main Hindu temple of the North, the Nallur Kandaswamy temple, built in the year 948, reflect the city's rich historical heritage.
