Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Airport – Negombo

You will arrive at Bandaranaike International , where a representative of Wonderscapes Travels will warmly welcome you. You will then be transferred to the coastal city of Negombo. Upon arrival, check in to your hotel and relax. In the afternoon, visit Muthurajawela and enjoy a nature tour along the Hamilton Canal by small boat, where you can observe the rich birdlife and mangrove ecosystem. Afterwards, return to the hotel.

Day 2: Wilpattu National Park

After breakfast at your hotel, visit the famous Negombo Fish Market, which is very active in the morning. You will then leave the hotel and proceed to the world-famous Wilpattu National Park. Witness the magical beauty of the “Willus”, natural sand-rimmed basins that collect groundwater and provide refreshing habitats for birds, reptiles, and other wildlife. Wilpattu National Park is home to many fascinating species of animals, including the Sri Lankan sloth bear, which is one of the park’s most notable residents. You may also encounter several archaeological sites within the park, including the ruins believed to be the Palace of Kuweni. In the evening, enjoy an exciting jeep safari through the park’s unique landscapes, including its famous white sandy clearings. Keep your cameras ready, as you may be lucky enough to spot leopards resting on the sandy terrain. After the safari, return to your campsite and enjoy a delicious barbecue dinner, followed by an overnight stay at the campsite.

Day 3: Wilpattu National Park – Anuradhapura

Witness the ethereal charm of Wilpattu National Park in the golden light of the morning sun. Herds of deer are often seen in the early hours of the day. You will also see flocks of birds flying across the brilliant blue sky, welcoming the new day with their cheerful songs. Spend a few hours exploring the park while keeping an eye out for sloth bears and leopards. Return to the campsite for breakfast before proceeding to Anuradhapura, the first capital of Sri Lanka and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is home to numerous ruins of ancient temples, monasteries, and royal palaces that reflect the grandeur of Sri Lanka’s early civilization. Among the most sacred sites is the Sri Maha Bodhi Tree, which is over 2,200 years old and considered the oldest historically documented tree in the world. You will also visit the Ruwanweliseya Stupa, one of the most revered dagobas in Buddhist culture, offering a fascinating insight into the island’s religious heritage and ancient architectural traditions. Other important attractions include the Isurumuniya Rock Temple, which dates back to the 3rd century BC, and the serene Samadhi Buddha Statue, renowned for its remarkable craftsmanship and spiritual significance. Return to the hotel in Anuradhapura and enjoy dinner in a spacious garden surrounded by serenity and old-world charm.

Things to Keep in Mind

Wear modest, light-colored clothing with shoulders and knees covered when visiting temples and religious sites.

No hats or footwear allowed inside temples. Bring flip-flops (easy to remove) and socks for hot ground surfaces.

Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and insect repellent. The tropical sun can be intense, especially during outdoor excursions.

Photography restrictions apply at certain religious sites. Always ask permission before taking photos of people or sacred areas.

Day 4: Hiriwadunna Village – Minneriya National Park

After breakfast at your hotel, travel to the local village of Hiriwadunna. Experience the charming simplicity of village life while exploring historic man-made reservoirs. Walk through the village and savour mouth-watering traditional dishes prepared by the locals. A delightful catamaran ride on the village lake will complete your tour of this authentic rural setting. In the afternoon, you will visit Minneriya National Park, which is well known for its large herds of elephants. Visitors often have the opportunity to witness these majestic giants of the jungle at close range. The park is also home to many species of mammals, birds, butterflies, and fish, and you are likely to encounter a variety of wildlife during your safari.

Day 5: Minneriya National Park – Kaudulla National Park

Set off on a jeep safari to Minneriya National Park, which covers an area of 8,889 hectares. The wetlands of this park are of great national importance, as they are home to a wide variety of endemic flora and fauna. Around 160 species of birds, both resident and migratory, have been recorded here, along with nine species of amphibians, 25 species of reptiles, 26 species of fish, and more than 78 species of butterflies. Enjoy a packed breakfast within the park before returning to the hotel for a refreshing shower and lunch. In the afternoon, you will proceed Kaudulla National Park for your second safari of the day. This enchanting national park is home to 24 species of mammals, with the Sri Lankan elephant being the most prominent. It is estimated that nearly 200 elephants inhabit the lush green landscapes of the park. Over 400 species of birds have also been recorded in Kaudulla National Park, which is recognised as an Important Bird Area in Sri Lanka.

Day 6: Gal Oya National Park

After breakfast at your hotel, set off to explore the beautiful Gal Oya National Park. En route, you may enjoy a delicious local lunch. At Gal Oya National Park, you can experience both boat safaris and jeep safaris. During the boat safari, you may visit the picturesque Bird Island, where large flocks of beautiful birds can often be seen. You may also have the rare opportunity to witness the fascinating sight of elephants swimming across the sparkling waters of the Senanayake Samudra reservoir. After the safari, return to the hotel and relax.

Day 7: Gal Oya National Park

Leave your hotel with your packed breakfast and lunch to visit Gal Oya National Park. Begin your adventure with an enchanting boat safari in the park and visit Bird Island. The morning hours are ideal for observing the breathtaking flocks of birds that inhabit the area, so keep your cameras ready to capture some memorable shots. Enjoy your breakfast on board before proceeding to the Nilgala entrance of Gal Oya National Park. From here, embark on an exciting jeep safari through the rugged terrain, which is teeming with birds, butterflies, and other wildlife. You may also have the opportunity to visit the Makara place, where an underground river originates. Enjoy your lunch during the safari, and return to the hotel upon completion of the tour.

Day 8: Yala National Park

After breakfast at your hotel, you will proceed to Yala via Monaragala. En route, enjoy a delicious lunch at a local restaurant.

Leave your hotel with a packed breakfast for the world-renowned Yala National Park. This mesmerizing destination is famous for having one of the highest leopard densities in the world, giving you an excellent chance to spot these elusive predators in their natural habitat. Yala is also rich in biodiversity, offering sightings of numerous species of flora and fauna during your safari. In addition, the park contains several remarkable archaeological sites nestled within its dense foliage, adding a historical dimension to your wildlife adventure. Enjoy your lunch at a scenic spot inside the park before continuing your exploration.

Day 10: Galle – Colombo

After breakfast at your hotel, transfer to Colombo. En route, visit the historic city of Galle and explore its many attractions, including the Dutch Fort, a living UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stroll along the charming cobbled streets of the fort, admire the colonial-era buildings and churches, and enjoy stunning views of the azure blue Indian Ocean from the sun-drenched ramparts. Upon completion, proceed to Colombo, the commercial capital of Sri Lanka, and experience the vibrant diversity of the city. Explore key attractions such as the Old Parliament, Independence Memorial Hall, Colombo City Hall, National Museum, Khan Clock Tower, Gangaramaya Temple, Red Mosque, and the bustling Pettah Bazaar. At all religious sites in Sri Lanka everyone is expected to dress respectfully in modest light coloured clothing with shoulders & knees covered

NO hats or footwear are allowed inside temples, so flip flops (which you would have to leave at the entrance) and an extra pair of socks are a good idea so you do not have to walk barefoot on the hot ground.
