Visit the Sri Maha Bodhi - the sacred fig tree grown from a cutting of the original Bodhi tree under which Lord Buddha attained enlightenment. This hallowed tree, now over 2,250 years old, is the oldest documented tree in the world. Explore the colossal Ruwanweliseya Dagoba, one of the world's tallest ancient structures, and discover the Isurumuniya Rock Temple with its remarkable carved figures, including the celebrated "Isurumuniya Lovers." Pay homage at the Samadhi Buddha Statue, one of the finest examples of ancient Buddhist sculpture on the island.

Later in the day, make your way to Mihintale - considered the cradle of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. It was here, in the 3rd century BC, that the Indian monk Mahinda introduced Buddhism to King Devanampiyatissa. Climb the ancient stone stairway to the summit and visit the Ambasthala Dagoba, built on the very spot where that momentous encounter took place.

Return to Dambulla for a restful overnight stay.

Visit the Royal Palace complex of King Parakramabahu, the spectacular Gal Vihara - a breathtaking series of colossal Buddha figures carved directly from a single granite face - and other magnificent ruins scattered across this ancient urban landscape.

Continue to Medirigiriya and the Mandalagiri Vatadage - a beautifully preserved circular relic house dating back to the 7th century AD. The park is also home to leopards, spotted deer, sambar, crocodiles, and a rich variety of birdlife.

Important Notes

Your accommodation, meal plan and transfers are tailored to your preferences & budget

Bring cool & comfortable clothing!

Sunscreen, flip flops, shoes and insect repellent will always come in handy

At all religious sites in Sri Lanka everyone is expected to dress respectfully in modest light coloured clothing with shoulders & knees covered

NO hats or footwear are allowed inside temples, so flip flops (which you would have to leave at the entrance) and an extra pair of socks are a good idea so you do not have to walk barefoot on the hot ground.
